Sanctuary Farm Naivasha: Horse Riding and Walking Safaris with Wildlife

Sanctuary Farm is situated on a 400-acre private wildlife conservancy on the southern shore of Lake Naivasha, directly adjacent to Crescent Island. It has been one of the most unique wildlife experiences in the Naivasha area for decades, offering something that very few places in Kenya can match: the opportunity to explore among wild animals on horseback.

Being on horseback changes the entire dynamic of wildlife encounter. Animals that have evolved to assess threat based on the silhouette and movement of ground-level predators register the horse as a four-legged creature — and ignore the human sitting on top. Zebras, Masai giraffes, impala, waterbuck, and gazelles continue their grazing undisturbed as you pass among them at close range. It is one of the most intimate wildlife encounters available anywhere in Kenya.

Horse Riding Safaris

Sanctuary Farm’s horse riding safaris are the flagship experience and the reason most visitors come. Rides typically last one to two hours and take you through the conservancy along the lake shore, among herds of grazing wildlife. Guides ride alongside and provide commentary on the animals and the ecosystem. The pace is gentle and suited to riders of moderate experience — total beginners should discuss their ability level with the staff before booking, as navigating wildlife encounters on horseback requires a degree of comfort in the saddle.

The lake views from horseback, with Crescent Island visible across the water and Mount Longonot rising beyond, are memorable. Early morning rides are particularly beautiful when the light is golden and the wildlife is most active.

Other Activities

Guided Walking Safaris

For those who prefer to be on foot, guided walks through the conservancy offer excellent wildlife viewing. The absence of predators on the Sanctuary Farm property — mirroring the situation at Crescent Island — means that encounters with herbivores are at close range and unhurried.

Night Game Drives

Open-top vehicle drives after dark offer a completely different perspective on the conservancy. Nocturnal animals — including genets, bushbabies, porcupines, and various mongoose species — emerge after dark. The atmosphere of the Rift Valley at night, with the lake visible under a clear sky, is one of the quieter pleasures of a Naivasha visit.

Accommodation

Sanctuary Farm offers accommodations in four cottages and camping areas, along with a rebuilt on-site restaurant. Staying overnight provides the opportunity for both dawn and dusk wildlife encounters and eliminates the time pressure of a day visit.
