Olkaria Geothermal Spa: Naivasha’s Natural Hot Springs Experience

The Olkaria Geothermal Spa draws on the same underground heat source that powers the Olkaria Geothermal Power Station, Africa’s first geothermal power plant, which is located within the park, to maintain its swimming pool at a naturally warm temperature year-round.

Inside the boundaries of Hell’s Gate National Park, where volcanic steam vents still breathe from the earth, and the geological forces that shaped the Rift Valley remain visibly active, Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) operates something unique: a geothermally heated outdoor swimming facility.

The spa is not Kenya’s Blue Lagoon. It is honest about what it is: a KenGen-operated recreational facility in an industrial landscape, adjacent to the power stations visible on the horizon.

The backdrop lacks the drama of Iceland’s famous geothermal pools, and the facilities are utilitarian rather than luxurious. Managing expectations is important. What it does offer is genuinely interesting: a chance to swim in water heated by the volcanic forces that created Hell’s Gate, in a location steeped in geological significance, at a price accessible to Kenyan residents. This makes Olkaria Geothermal Spa a must-visit place when you’re in Naivasha

The Geological Context of Olkaria Geothermal Spa in Naivasha

The Olkaria geothermal field sits at the intersection of multiple fault systems within the Rift Valley, where magma remains relatively close to the surface, and groundwater percolating down through fissures is heated to very high temperatures.

The steam this produces is captured by KenGen’s power stations and used to generate electricity. Olkaria now supplies a significant share of Kenya’s national electricity grid with geothermal energy.

The spa complex uses heated water from this system rather than direct steam. The temperature is maintained at a comfortable, therapeutic level, warm enough to be clearly geothermal in origin, and particularly appreciated on cool Naivasha mornings or after a long hike.

The Experience

The main attraction is the large outdoor heated swimming pool. Facilities include changing rooms, shower facilities, and seating areas. The surrounding landscape, Hell’s Gate’s characteristic red cliffs and volcanic topography, provides an unusual backdrop. On cool days, steam occasionally rises from the water.

Local Kenyan families use the spa regularly on weekends and holidays. The atmosphere is unpretentious and community-focused. Children enjoy the warm water, especially on cool highland mornings, and the spa does a brisk trade during public holidays and long weekends.
