Hippo Point is the most atmospheric address in the Naivasha area; and possibly one of the most atmospheric in Kenya. A grand house built in the 1930s on a private promontory on the western shore of Lake Oloiden, within its own wildlife sanctuary, it has been described as an African Downton Abbey, and the comparison is earned: high ceilings, antique furnishings, sweeping lake views, colonial-era architecture, and an unhurried pace of life that feels like a deliberate corrective to the modern world.
The name is not metaphorical. The hippos are right there, in the water below the terrace, visible from the dining room, audible at night. Lake Oloiden, being smaller and more intimate than Lake Naivasha, brings the wildlife correspondingly closer. Giraffes and zebras move through the surrounding sanctuary grounds. At sunset, with the sky turning copper and rose over the lake and the silhouettes of hippos breaking the surface, the scene is genuinely cinematic.
Accommodation at Hippo Point
Hippo Point operates as an exclusive accommodation property, hosting a very limited number of guests at any one time. This exclusivity is central to the experience: you essentially have the house and grounds to yourself, with the full attention of the staff. Rates are commensurately high and reflect the uniqueness of the property.
The rooms combine period furnishings with modern comfort, four-poster beds, claw-foot baths, original artworks, while the common areas retain the character of the original house. The dining room serves meals prepared from local ingredients, often including fresh fish from the lake.
The Wildlife Sanctuary
The private sanctuary surrounding Hippo Point on Lake Oloiden is part of the broader Oserengoni ecosystem, which supports lion, leopard, giraffe, zebra, topi, waterbuck, and various antelope. Game walks and drives within the sanctuary are available for guests. The evening hippo watch from the terrace, as pods of hippos emerge from the water to graze after dark, is a nightly highlight.
Sunsets at Hippo Point
The house faces west over Lake Oloiden, and the sunsets here are among the finest viewing points in the Rift Valley. The combination of altitude, the lake surface reflecting the sky, and the Mau escarpment as a backdrop creates conditions for extraordinary light. Non-residents occasionally arrange sundowner visits, check directly with the property for current arrangements.
