Crescent Island is one of the most unusual wildlife experiences in Kenya, and one of the most rewarding. This distinctive crescent-shaped landmass on the eastern side of Lake Naivasha is, depending on the lake level, sometimes a peninsula connected to the mainland and sometimes a true island; it has oscillated between the two throughout its history as the water level rises and falls.
What never changes is what makes it special: you can walk freely among wild animals, with no vehicle barrier between you and them, in one of the highest concentrations of wildlife of any protected area near Nairobi.
The crescent shape of the island is not coincidental. Crescent Island forms part of the rim of an ancient sunken volcano, the same geological history that created Mount Longonot and the dramatic topography of the surrounding Rift Valley.
The elevated ridge at the island’s centre, formed from the old caldera rim, provides panoramic views across Lake Naivasha to Mount Longonot, the Aberdare Range, and the Mau Escarpment. It is genuinely one of the great 360-degree views in the Rift Valley.
The island gained international fame as a filming location for the 1985 Academy Award-winning film Out of Africa, starring Meryl Streep and Robert Redford. Many of the film’s iconic wildlife scenes were shot here and on the surrounding ranches. This is what makes Crescent Island one of the popular areas in Naivasha.

Why There Are No Predators on Crescent Island Naivasha
The key to the Crescent Island experience is the absence of predators. There are no lions, leopards, hyenas, or cheetahs on the island. As a result, the zebras, Masai giraffes, wildebeest, waterbuck, impala, gazelles, dik-dik, and other herbivores that populate the island are completely relaxed in the presence of humans on foot.
You can approach to within a few metres of a giraffe, watch zebras graze at arm’s length, and observe the full, unhurried daily life of African wildlife without the mediation of a vehicle.
For families visiting Kenya for the first time, and for anyone who has never experienced walking safari, this is genuinely transformative.

How to Get To Crescent Island Naivasha
Crescent Island is currently accessible primarily by boat from the mainland. Boats depart from various jetties along the south and east shore of Lake Naivasha, including Camp Carnelly’s, Lake Naivasha Resort (LNR), Lake Naivasha Sopa Resort, Fisherman’s Camp, and Karagita Beach.
The boat journey takes approximately 15–45 minutes, depending on your departure point and the current lake level. The island can occasionally also be accessed by road through Sanctuary Farm when water levels are low enough.
Pro tip: combine the boat transfer to Crescent Island with a one-hour lake cruise. Rather than paying for two separate excursions, negotiate with your boat captain to cruise among the hippos and birds on the lake before landing at the island. This combines both experiences efficiently and economically.
